Important Notice affecting all manufacturers and importers of small air conditioning equipment:
We have been advised by the Department of Climate Change that from 1 July 2024, Australia will ban the import and manufacture of small air conditioning equipment using refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) over 750. The ban will apply to equipment designed to use refrigerant over 750 GWP, even if the equipment is imported without refrigerant.
This ban targets equipment designed to heat or cool a stationary space (mainly for human comfort), such as the window units or non-ducted split systems, that would hold a charge of up to 2.6kg of refrigerant.
Exempt from ban:
The move is not unexpected, coming after a consultation with industry in 2021 on a proposed ban. Such a measure would speed up the transition away from gas with higher GWP value such as R410A (GWP of 2,088), to gas with lower GWP value such as R32 (GWP of 675). Existing certificates are unaffected. However, we advise manufacturers to begin to get ready for the ban.
SAA Approvals is accredited by the Joint Accreditation Service of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) as a third party certification body to issue certificates for electrical equipment that has proven to comply with the safety requirements of the applicable Australian Standard.
