Last Friday, the Queensland Government issued a Declaration of Recognised External Certification Scheme (RECS) for SAA Approvals PTY LTD.

This is what it means for our customers:

Absolutely nothing changes for our customers unless they choose to use the RECS scheme instead of the REAS scheme at the time of application. If neither box is ticked, at this stage we will use the NSW REAS system by default. There is no application fee difference between the two schemes.

This does not affect EMC applications in any way.

Clients can now choose at the time of the application whether to apply using our New South Wales (REAS) process, or the Queensland (RECS) process. There are slightly different requirements in some instances and we will explain those at the time of application. Please note that both certification schemes (REAS and RECS) are fully accepted as means of documentary compliance with Australian law. Here is what the top of the new application form now looks like:

With the RECS option there are 3 levels of in-scope electrical equipment, level 1, 2 or 3 which certificates can be issued and uploaded to the EESS database. Further details can be found in AS/NZS 4417.2. Certificates for level 3 items will be called Certificates of Conformity. Certificates for level 1 and 2 items will be called Certificates of Suitability. Please note that this does not apply to most commercial or industrial products as they were outside the scope of AS/NZS 4417.2 (the standard which governs the use of the RCM) and of the Equipment Safety Rules which were used as the basis of the Queensland legislation. We will continue to offer Certificates of Suitability for this equipment, but the certificates are not uploaded to the EESS database.

The reason SAA has signed up as a RECS is to give our customers their own choice about which scheme to use and to continue our close working relationship with all Australian regulators in the pursuit of better public electrical safety.

We are very happy to welcome Crystal Liu and Sarah Wang to our staff. Crystal has joined our engineering team and comes from the Shanghai area. Sarah has initially joined our team to cover for Hazel Martin, who is on maternity leave. Sarah also has an engineering background and will join the engineering team when Hazel returns to work. In the meantime, Hazel and her husband Brayden have welcomed a baby boy, Xavier and Hoong and his wife Rachel welcomed a baby girl, Annabel, into the world. We are very happy for them and wish them all the best.

SAA Approvals is accredited by the Joint Accreditation Service of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) as a third party certification body to issue certificates for electrical equipment that has proven to comply with the safety requirements of the applicable Australian Standard.
SAA Approvals is accepted and gazetted by the New South Wales Fair Trading as a Recognised External Approvals Scheme (REAS) and Queensland Electrical Safety Office as a Recognised External Certification Scheme (RECS).
