The New South Wales Regulator has been writing to importers and sellers of Power Supplies advising them that AS/NZS 60950.1 is not an appropriate standard for power supplies for general use. If the power supply is for use with IT products only, then an approval to AS/NZS 60950.1 is permitted. However, it should state on the packaging or product that it is for use with IT products only, or be supplied with an IT product. Even if the power supply has USB outputs only, it can still be used for general products as many toys, luminaires, appliances and other categories also use the USB protocol for connection to a power supply. It is for this reason that AS/NZS 61558 is available in the declaring definition for power supplies and this standard should be used for any general power supplies. Please communicate this to your customers, as they will have to update the approval if their approval is affected by the above advice.

Building Wire Cables

There has been false advice recently given by other parties that SAA Certificates of Approval for Building Wire Cable to AS/NZS 5000.1 and AS/NZS 5000.2 were not able to be uploaded to the EESS database. This is not the case. SAA Certificates of Approval are issued under the NSW REAS scheme and these certificates are accepted and uploaded into the EESS database. This has recently been confirmed in writing by the ESO.

There is an unfortunate situation in Australia where the NSW REAS requirements for testing of building wire cable and those of the Queensland RECS scheme do not coincide. This does not matter for your customers, as certificates issued by either scheme are accepted in all States and Territories of Australia. The requirement from the REAS scheme which SAA follows is that the products are tested to the standard (5000.1 or 5000.2) using the IEC decision sheet for sample selection. Additionally the manufacturer must supply the routine test report required by these standards, preferably for each size of cable they are applying for if practical. We will then certify on that basis.

This area is the subject of regulatory debate at the moment, so the requirements may change.
